Implementation of a no Waste Environment
Stage 1: New Ball Program to replace medals
Part of creating healthier communities is dealing with the amount of waste every year.
I thought a lot about it, and I realized that so many used tennis balls are ending up in the landfill. Another problem was that so many medals were too. So, we created a program that combined both. As a charity, it was an amazing way to cut our costs.
For the Girls Set Match Event, we gave each girl a ball that had a word written on it. We used the word grace for the event. We chose this word because of a talk I had with the girls about how important it is to show grace to an opponent, regardless if you won or lost.
One of the girls playing in the event was my granddaughter. I couldn't believe that after she received the ball, she taped the box and the ball on top of it, onto her wall, so each time she went into her room, that is what she saw. It actually brought tears to my eyes, and then I found out my grandson who received a ball in his round robin event, did the same thing. These really have meaning behind them because it comes with a story. I will write a word on the balls and then base a story on the word, so that the kids, like my grandchildren, can assign meaning to them.
Stage 2: Box Design
The box was designed so that each ball can fit into it perfectly. On one side of the box is a picture of two girls who were in our program, the logo on the other side and our core values at the top.
On one side, there is a picture of myself with a personal message that reads: "A place where fun and play changes lives! The combination of hard work, faith in possibilities, and perseverance can transform your life. Dream Big! I believe in you."
On the remaining side, it's written: "This ball tells the story of those who’ve held it and each bounce, scuff and mark is proof of its journey: the new player taking their first swing, a coach inspiring the next generation, competitions striving for excellence. Most of all, it has connected the lives of those envisioning a future of health, happiness and success."
The ball program is very important to our organization and every one is given to each child who comes through our organization.
I look at balls differently now, and I notice how they get used with every stroke. Just like the pictures, it tells a million stories of those who've played with them. I love that about this program. If a child who receives the ball as a gift in its tiny box doesn't want it anymore, it is returned so we can use it again.
Please save all your balls for us. We will provide a special message to each child, providing inspiration, empowerment and encouragement so they can believe in their dreams. You can email us and we will gladly pick them up.
Thanks so much for your support!
